The Birds

The story begins as an innocuous romantic triangle involving wealthy, spoiled Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren), handsome Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor), and schoolteacher Annie Hayworth (Suzanne Pleshette). The human story begins in a San Francisco pet shop and culminates at the home of Mitch’s mother (Jessica Tandy) at Bodega Bay, where the characters’ sense of security is slowly eroded by the curious behavior of the birds in the area. At first, it’s no more than a sea gull swooping down and pecking at Melanie’s head. Things take a truly ugly turn when hundreds of birds converge on a children’s party. There is never an explanation as to why the birds have run amok, but once the onslaught begins, there’s virtually no letup. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A classic.

An absolute classic. One of my all time favorites.  As with many Alfred Hitchcock’s movies. Whenever this in on TV I stop everything and tune in. The unexplained phenomena is a trend with horror movies, but the subtle scare in this movie is perfection.

Not to mention the gorgeous Tippi Hedren tippi hedren the birds(mother to Melanie Griffith, grandmother to Dakota Johnson aka Anastasia Steele) and the equally gorgeous Rod Taylor cast as the lead roles. They were amazing together. There is one thing that I notice with older movies is how forward the women are. I was taken back by this at first.

rod taylor the birdsMelanie (Tippi Hedren) meets a very handsome Mitch (Rod Taylor)  at a bird shop. Mitch plays a joke on Melanie and leaves the store. Melanie being immediately attracted to this sex on a stick decides to purchase love birds and deliver them to Mitch. She soon finds out that the delivery is a tad more complicated than expected and decides to drive 60 miles up the coast to Bodega Bay where Mitch is visiting his mother and sister. (insert shocked face).

Not for nothing but a guy I just met at a bird shop that decides to play somewhat of a cruel joke on me would not deserve all that time and effort. Well ok, maybe if he looked like Rod Taylor 🙂 I think it is a little cray that any woman would make all that kind of effort. But get this, this isn’t the only Alfred Hitchcock movie where the woman takes the first step.

Maybe Mr. Hitchcock was a  closet feminist 🙂

The movie proceeds with the birds attacking the town, people dying etc.  The effects were lacking obviously but the real threat of birds swarming around you pecking at you till you die is a little too real to forget.

To me the reason why this is so terrifying is that this could actually happen. There is no villain, it is just mother nature at it’s worst.
